Alesund was largely destroyed by a 1904 fire. Since Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany loved vacationing there, he led the rebuilding in the contemporary German art nouveau style.

From the open air Sunnmore museum, a restored Viking boathouse with traditional roof. The roof is constructed with multiple layers of birch bark followed by sod. Evidently goats are used to trim the growth.
