Marine iguanas blend with the lava rocks. Here they are sunning themselves to warm up before entering the water to feed on marine algae atop submerged rocks.

Galapagos tortoises at the Darwin Breeding center. During the 1800's whalers decimated the population of giant tortoises since they were a convenient protein source. Giant tortoises can survive for about 1 yr without food. All baby and adolescent tortoises are numbered, RFID-tagged and monitored by TV cameras. There is evidently a black market for these endangered animals. Our naturalist explained that a few yrs ago, 2 caretakers were imprisoned for stealing and selling them.

These giant tortoises were grazing on the Manzanillo cattle ranch where they are allowed by law to roam freely. The ranch benefits from the tortoises since they help fertilize the soil. Fences are designed to allow the tortoises to migrate up/down the hills as seasonal vegatation changes.
