A walking tour through the heritage section of Mumbai

iPhone pano of the Gateway to India (center) and the Taj Mahal Palace hotel (right). This was taken on a Friday morning so the crowds were minimal.

Boats behind the Gateway (taken from moving bus).

The now decrepit Watson hotel which rejected Mr Tata's entry years ago because he was not white. This inspired billionaire Tata to build the Taj Mahal Palace hotel where there is a sign saying "All welcome, including Englishmen" (or something similar). See link

Closeup of the older part of the Taj, not shown is the modern skyscraper Taj to the right

Street scenes in Mumbai where the income disparity is striking. Note that the streets of San Francisco can also show similar contrasts!

The top of the Victoria Rail station

A very loud seller of ice cream

Techies buying lunch from a street vendor

People were generally friendly to tourists holding cameras

As cows are revered in India, this cow is owned by 2 women who bring the cow into the city every day to be fed by passersby. The women sell the greens to passersby who feed the cow. The women also sell the milk, so the cow is basically fed for free.

The famous, massive outdoor laundry in front of modern buildings: very colorful!

The $2B house built by Mr. Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India. Evidently, he has a staff of 600 who also live in the house.

The port of Mumbai where our boat docked- this will be torn down soon as there was construction to the left and right (working 24hr/day!)

From the moving bus, the big hole in front of the airport for the future subway that will whisk people from the airport terminals to downtown.
